Fresno Grizzlies news story

Fresno, CA – The Fresno Growers (24-18) were uprooted 6-3 by Chukchansi Park’s Visalia Rawhide (17-25) on Friday night. Fresno fell to 24-4 at home and 45-13 all-time against the Rawhide. The Growers have still won 23 of their last 29 games against their Highway 99 rivals. Fresno fell to 0-4 in Friday’s home games and has split the first four games of the series against Visalia.

The Rawhide took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning after Junior Franco rushed home on a groundout by Ruben Santana. Franco doubled before scoring the run. In the top of the sixth inning, Visalia recorded four runs on five hits. Franco tripled to center to add Jansel Luis. Next, Santana scored Franco with a single to center. Then Druw Jones doubled to left, bringing in Santana. Finally, Anderdson Rojas singled to right, registering Jones.

The Growers planted two runs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to three. Felix Tena singled to center to score GJ Hill and Braylen Wimmer. The Rawhide extended the lead back to four in the top of the ninth inning when Angel Ortiz grounded out Rojas. In the bottom of the ninth, Fresno attempted a comeback victory. A single by Ben McCabe, a free pass by Hill and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position. Then Aidan Longwell ripped a single to left, bringing in McCabe. With runners on the corners and two outs, Wimmer hit a force out to end the game. Wimmer was the equalizer at the dish.

Visalia starter Denny Larrondo (1-1) earned the win after five and a third innings of work. Larrondo allowed a pair of unearned runs on three hits and two walks while fanning six. Teofilo Mendez retired two batters to stop the bleeding in the sixth inning. Hayden Durke struckout five batters over two zero frames to pick up his fourth win of the year. Yordin Chalas closed out the ninth for the Rawhide. Fresno righty Jack Mahoney (2-4) was tagged with the loss after six five-run innings. Mahoney didn’t issue a walk and whiffed three batters, all of which ended the frame. Stu Flesland III came out of the bullpen disgustingly well, catching two batters looking for strikeouts. Flesland III dazzled for three innings, the most by a Fresno reliever in a game this season. Fresno continues their six-game series against Visalia tomorrow night from Chukchansi Park.
