SWANSEA – Despite only three hits himself, Case held off a tough Dighton-Rehoboboth attack at home Monday afternoon.

The Cardinals tacked on the lone run in the first inning and came away with the 1-0 South Coast Conference win over Elizabeth S. Brown Elementary.

“We had a conversation yesterday as a coaching staff and I said we need Lila (Alvarez) to throw like she threw against them last time, but this isn’t going to be a one-point game (again). Twice I told my team that and twice they proved me wrong,” Cardinals coach Shannon Silva said of her team’s performance.

Senior captain Megan Smith doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning before a sacrifice bunt for Nicole Rebelo moved her to third base. Junior captain and catcher Breanna Fontes drove Smith from third with an RBI groundout to second to make it 1-0 after one in Case (12-1).

From that point on, freshman Alvarez took over and went the distance while working around three walks, three singles, a hit batter and a pair of two-base errors.

“As a freshman pitcher, we were all really nervous that she wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure just because she’s so young, but she’s done a great job so far,” Smith said of playing behind Alvarez . ‘She always called. She never loses her cool.”

Alvarez struckout eight batters that day and retired seven of her last eight batters.

The outfield defense played a big role as Smith made a few catches a few feet away from the center field fence and she even stopped a runner from scoring from first by playing a Skye Harrison hit on the bounce, while Izzy Moss had to stay in third place.

“We’ve been working really, really hard in practice (on outfield drills),” Smith said. “I know everyone always thinks the infield is the most important thing. The outfield is very important and luckily we have two great outfield coaches: coach Nicki (Henrique) and coach Julie. They spend so much time on us. So that’s why we can perform like this.”

Overall, both teams combined to go 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, with Dighton-Rehoboth (11-3) going 0-for-6 in those opportunities.

“I’m super proud of my team because they are very young this year, but they are not playing like they are young,” Silva said. “They don’t play like they’re nervous. I say to them, ‘You wouldn’t know it was the seventh and we were up by one point, or that it was the first and it was nothing, nothing.’ They always play the same way.”

Elly LaTour threw six frames, allowed one run and struck out three for the Falcons.

Then Case heads to Bourne on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. The Falcons also head to Old Rochester for a game on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
