League Report: Treaty United 0 – 1 Athlone Town – The home of Irish football

Eanna Mackey reports from Market’s Field.

Luckless Treaty United extended their winless run to nine games after suffering their fourth successive defeat following a 1-0 defeat at home to Athlone Town in the First Division on Monday afternoon.

Treaty came into the match hoping to end their poor run of form, while Athlone arrived at the Markets Field unbeaten in four games, having already defeated Shannosiders in the return fixture last month.

In a first quarter without chances, Marc Byrne’s effort came close after just over a minute. Treaty had a case for a penalty in the twenty-second minute when Alec Byrne was bundled in the penalty area as he rose to head the ball, but referee Alan Patchell waved away the calls.

Apart from that first half it was a dull affair with very few goals scored, leaving the teams going in goalless at the break.

Just fifteen seconds after the restart the deadlock was broken when Athlone’s kick-off culminated in Dean Ebbe’s shot from the Treaty box rattling into the top corner.

Treaty reacted almost immediately when Alec Byrnes’ tap into the penalty area beat Minogue in the Athlone goal but was cleared off the line by Rodriguez. Moments later, Connolly came within inches of doubling the visitors’ lead when he drove his shot over from the edge of the penalty area.

Treaty then had a few chances in quick succession. Considine’s low effort forced Minogue into a good save. Byrne’s header from the follow-up corner was well saved.

The Shannonsiders were then dealt a hammer blow when O’Connor was shown a straight red card, after Patchell established himself as the last man back after taking down Campion-Hinds.

Hopes of a Treaty equalizer diminished greatly after the red card. Connolly was shown a second yellow card in the ninety-sixth minute, but it was too late to help Treaty’s cause as the match again ended in defeat.

Tommy Barrett’s men will now turn their attention to the play-off visit to Wexford in an attempt to arrest their run of form. Meanwhile, Athlone will entertain Bray.
