Crystal Palace 4-0 Manchester United (May 6, 2024) Game analysis

Michael Olise scored a brace of goals as Crystal Palace completed a league double over Manchester United for the first time in their history with a resounding 4-0 win at Selhurst Park on Monday, which will increase the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

A makeshift United defense, with Casemiro at centre-back, was easily picked apart by Palace on several occasions as Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell got on the scoresheet in the impressive win.

United remain in eighth place with 54 points from 35 games, two points behind Newcastle United in sixth place, as hopes of European football next season are fast fading. Palace are still in fourteenth place with 43 points from 36 games.

United had several injury absences and were without Bruno Fernandes. It was the first time in his 230-match Old Trafford career that he has missed a match with injury, but the ease with which they were defeated will be a major concern for everyone at the club.

It is the first time in the Premier League era that United have lost thirteen games in a season and the score could have been even worse.

Palace have found their feet under new manager Oliver Glasner, but United are limping towards the end of a season that cannot end soon enough for Ten Hag.

The home team took the lead within twelve minutes and that was far too easy. Olise collected a throw and evaded a weak challenge from Casemiro, and with no United players trying to close him down, he was able to fire a low shot from just inside the penalty area.

United had the ball in the back of the net through Casemiro’s header, but the effort was disallowed after contact from Rasmus Højlund on Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

It was 2-0 to the home side five minutes before half-time when Mateta raced past United defender Jonny Evans and smashed the ball into the net for a ninth goal in 11 games since Glasner’s arrival in February.

The striker has scored eleven goals in his previous eighty appearances for Palace.

United’s defense struggled to contain the hosts’ movement and when Diogo Dalot failed to deal with a ball at the back post, Mitchell was tapped with home players lining up to score.

Olise’s second goal added more salt to the wound and it could have been worse for the visitors as Odsonne Édouard saw his shot come back off the woodwork late on.
