Driver dies after crashing into White House gate, US Secret Service says

A driver died Saturday evening after his vehicle crashed into a White House fence, authorities said.

The man was found dead in the vehicle after the crash near an exterior gate of the White House complex shortly before 10:30 p.m., the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement.

Security protocols were implemented, but there was no threat to the White House, the agency said. The driver was not immediately identified.

The Secret Service will continue to investigate the case while turning the fatal crash portion of the investigation over to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, the agency said.

“At this time, the incident is only being investigated as a traffic accident,” law enforcement authorities said in a statement.

The Metropolitan Police Department responded around 10:45 p.m. to reports that a vehicle “traveling at a high rate of speed” collided with an exterior gate of the White House, Fox News reported.

Earlier in January, a man was arrested near the White House for crashing a vehicle into an exterior gate of the presidential mansion complex.
