Police issue arrest warrant over firearms incident at Wellington Hospital

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a 21-year-old man charged after a violent altercation, including the firing of a gun, outside Wellington Hospital last week.

The Gisborne man – who was charged with possessing an offensive weapon – failed to appear in the Wellington District Court this morning.

He was arrested on Thursday and was due to appear in court this morning.

Police believe he may have presented a knife during a confrontation outside a Riddiford St motel, which escalated into a gun being fired outside the entrance to Wellington Hospital.

“Investigations are underway to locate them,” a spokesperson said.

Two other people involved in the incident have been arrested.

A 22-year-old man who allegedly fired the gun during the altercation was charged with discharging a firearm with intent to intimidate and appeared in the New Plymouth District Court on May 4.

A 40-year-old man who allegedly handed over a machete during the incident was taken into custody yesterday. He was released on bail and was due to appear in court again on May 27.
