Entertainment News: What are we playing this week? (13/5/2024)

This week it’s all about indie games and anime.

Pat yourself on the back, we’re almost halfway through May! This week, PC players will finally be able to get their hands on Ghost of Tsushima (with one notable caveat, which we’ll get to later) as the new Ryan Reynolds collaborative IF hits theaters. There will also be quite a few fun indie games coming out in the coming days, and one of them is a very cute Dungeons & Dragons-inspired RPG.

Here’s what we’re playing and watching this week.

What are we playing?

First up is the PC release of Sucker Punch Productions’ action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, including the Iki Island expansion in 2021. Here’s what you need to know: While most people can get their hands on the game when it releases on May 16, gamers in specific regions won’t be able to play the game until they sign up for a PlayStation Network account from another country. This is due to Sony’s new mandate that PlayStation Network accounts become necessary to play multiplayer games, despite the network being unavailable in many regions around the world.

Lessons were learned the recent Helldivers 2 debacle it seems, just not quite the right one. If that all seems like too much of a headache, there are a few indie games we’re keeping an eye on this week too. First up is Baladins, a game where you play as a team of highly skilled entertainers who tour a fantasy kingdom spreading joy and laughter. The Dungeons & Dragons-inspired game allows up to four players to create their own characters and make their own choices to create completely different story campaigns. This game will be released on May 15.

Alternatively, publisher Annapurna Interactive’s brilliantly titled new game Lorelei and the Laser Eyes follows a woman who takes part in a project in a strange old hotel. After being summoned there by an eccentric man, she becomes embroiled in a game of increasingly dangerous illusions. The player will have to solve a series of puzzles and riddles in this strange environment, all in order to decipher the mystery of Lorelei and the Laser Eyes.

What are we looking at?

The new comedy IF from John Krasinski (The Office, The Quiet Place) hits theaters this week and follows a young girl who is suddenly given the ability to see the abandoned imaginary friends (IFs) of others. When she finds out that her neighbor (Ryan Reynolds) has the same skills, they decide to reunite all the IFs with their former children.

Fans of the volleyball anime Haikyu!! can finally watch the first part of the two-part finale in theaters outside Japan this week, titled Haikyu!! The film: decisive battle at the dump. In the film, Hinata, Kageyama, and the rest of the Karasuno High volleyball team will ultimately face off against Nekoma High in the third round of the national championships.

For romance fans, Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1 releases on Netflix on May 16. This season follows Colin, the third Bridgerton son, as he returns from his travels to reunite with his once close friend Penelope, who we now know is Lady Whistledown. . There’s certainly a lot of room for drama.
