Trouble in the Church (1): Wakefield flares up again

Norman Lebrecht

May 5, 2024

The Anglican cathedral, which lost its last music director amid bullying allegations, has suspended three choristers.

A well-respected parishioner has told duikisc.com that her grandson, 13, ‘has decided to give up his duties as a chorister due to victimization and a toxic culture at Wakefield Cathedral’.

Other sources report:

– A boy has been suspended and an investigation is underway. It is not told what he did wrong.
– The boy’s caregivers have now been ‘missed emails’ and told they are not relevant.
– The choir has mixed the treble due to declining numbers and cannot hold all-boy or all-girl services.
– More than two-thirds of the choristers have left. No one has been added since the beginning of 2023.
– The Dean, who has overall responsibility for the protection of all members of the Cathedral, does not respond to complaints.
– The new Precentor claims to know nothing about suspensions, although pastoral responsibility for choir members lies with her.
– The Chief Operating Officer left after one year in office.
– The Leeds Diocese’s Safety Panel is investigating the cathedral’s “safety failures” with the help of their top staff.
