VCSU Softball defeats Mayville in losers’ game

DICKINSON, ND – Valley City State University scored four runs in the third inning Sunday afternoon as the No. 2 seed Vikings avoided elimination from the NSAA Postseason Softball Tournament.

VCSU’s big third inning propelled the Vikings to a 7-2 victory over No. 4 Mayville State in a loser’s game Sunday. The Vikings play No. 1 seed Bellevue again on Sunday at approximately 4:30 PM CT/3:30 PM MT. The winner will advance to Monday’s championship against Dickinson State University.

Mayville State ends the season with a 16-31 record.

Joelle Lamontagne started in the circle for VCSU and picked up the win after five solid innings. She scattered five hits, allowed two runs and struck out two. Maddy Zander pitched the final two innings to close out the victory.

The Vikings scored 14 goals in the win as the teams battled a strong 30 mile per hour wind blowing in from center field. Alyssa De Poorter led the Vikings with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, driving in two runs. Sierra Crocker went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Ashlyn Diemert And Maerin Dartnell had two hits each.

Courtney Boll started in the circle for Mayville State and gave up seven runs and five hits in 3.1 innings. Emily Haines pitched the final 3.2 innings, scattering seven hits and two runs.

Megan Elliott and Alyssa Avila each had two hits and an RBI for the Mayville State offense. VCSU led 7-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Mayville State drove in a run and loaded the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate before Zander was able to induce a game-ending flyout.
