Bowie State Wins Back-To-Back CIAA Softball Championship in 11-8 Victory Over Claflin

GLEN ALLEN, VA — The Bowie State University softball team is heading to the NCAA Division II postseason for the fifth time in school history after capturing the 2024 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship at the RF&P Park, beating Claflin University by a score of 11-8 Sunday afternoon .

Lindsey George (9-8) got the win for BSU (20-21). The right-hander went two innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing three walks, and striking out one. Karen Fritzges also pitched well, going three innings, surrendering one run on five hits, walking none, and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Bulldogs first put runs on the board in the first inning. BSU plated two runs off of Claflin pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Presleigh Braxton.

The Panthers then rallied to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead before the Bulldogs got back on the board in the second. Taylor Dawkins came across to score the lone run of the inning for BSU, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Panthers.

Claflin built their lead to 6-3 before the BSU offense got back to work, tying the ballgame at six in the fourth.

The Panthers broke the tie and took the lead heading into the sixth inning, when BSU got back on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run walk from Saniya Jones, bringing the score to 11-8 in favor of BSU. The score remained 11-8 for the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs held on for the win being crowned the 2024 CIAA Softball Champions.

» Coreena Dunham led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
» BSU got three-hit games from both Dunham and Braxton.
» Every Bulldogs’ starter reached base safely in the win.
» BSU’s highest-scoring inning was the sixth when it pushed five runs across.
» BSU pitchers faced 38 Claflin hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out four.
» Jayla Hill won the 2024 CIAA Softball Tournament MVP.
