Arrowverse actor returns for franchise finale

During a FAN EXPO Philadelphia panel on May 4 The flash‘s Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells, Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash) revealed he will star in the Superman and Lois Season 4 finale.

In the clip of the panel divided by @DevsMastani on X (formerly Twitter), Cavanagh did not make it clear who specifically he would be playing against. Throughout the various shows of the Arrowverse, he has played different variations of Harrison Wells and Eobard Thawne.

Cavanagh, who also directed several Arrowverse episodes, explained during the panel that he does not direct Superman and Lois‘final. However, screenwriter Todd Helbing asked him if he “would play a role” place in it.

Cavanagh said yes “something he’s glad he did:”

“So the ‘Superman & Lois’ finale was already wrapped up, and so I said, ‘Well, I’m glad I’m not doing it,’ and then Todd said, ‘Well, would you like to do a part?’ And so that’s coming, for those of you watching ‘Superman & Lois’ – something I’m glad I did.”

Cavanagh’s first Arrowverse appearance was in The flashwhere he was a series regular (as various variations of his character) through season 6. He has also appeared in almost every Arrowverse series with at least a cameo role.

Before this announcement, the only two he had not appeared in were the two Arrowverse-adjacent spin-offs, Star girl And Superman and Lois. However, he did direct the season 1 finale and season 3 premiere Superman and Loisalong with several episodes in other Arrowverse projects.

Cavanagh said he enjoys directing “finals and… premieres” for Superman and Lois “because you get so much more money.”

He has since explained that “they won’t have another episode after that”, it’s easier to find money for more expensive sequences:

“So what was interesting about the last season of ‘Superman & Lois’? I love doing their finales and their premieres, because you get so much more money, you know? And you get to do… While you’re at it a finale it’s like, ‘Okay, I just want them to fight on top of something and then land on a beam,’ and then they’re like, ‘We don’t have any of the money.’ I thought, ‘Well, find it,’ and then they don’t have another episode, so they love it.”

Cavanagh praised Helbing for being that way “ridiculously accommodating”, and adds Helbing “Know that he can trust what we do.” Cavanagh gives this trust, the result of previously working together on successful projects “lots of room for maneuver:”

“Todd Helbing – the showrunner – is ridiculously accommodating. When you work for a guy who knows we did the 100th together, he knows he can trust what we’re doing, and that the vision will be something that Warner Bros. loves will be up. And if you do that a few times, and Warner Bros. likes it, then you think… You have a lot of wiggle room.”

It’s hard to say who exactly Cavanagh will play in his Superman and Lois appearance, but fans have enough information to start speculating.

There are several versions of Cavanagh’s main Arrowverse character, making it likely that he will play at least some version of Harrison Wells or Eobard Thawne.

Cavanagh did return as the latter The flash‘s series finale in 2023, so there’s precedent for that option. Plus, there are so many options for different variations of Harrison Wells in the Multiverse that it wouldn’t be too difficult to bring one back, or even potentially introduce an entirely new one.

There’s also the possibility of him playing an entirely new character, who just so happens to look a lot like the Arrowverse characters Cavanagh previously portrayed. In a world of superheroes and comic book logic, that wouldn’t be the strangest thing to see happen.

However, it might be a disservice to some fans if Cavanagh returns in the very last spinoff episode of The CW’s Arrowverse, and doesn’t play someone fans already know.

It seems likely that this appearance – whether it’s a brief cameo or a larger role – will be some sort of tribute to the vast Arrowverse Multiverse. At the very least, it could give fans a chance to say goodbye to the franchise they love with one of the characters that tied everything together in the first place.

Although no specific date has been announced yet, Superman and Lois will premiere on The CW sometime this fall.
