Baseball Rallies to Send UTM Series Finale to Extras but Falls 22-20 in Epic Slugfest Sunday

MOREHEAD, KY — The Morehead State Eagles put together a spirited comeback, scoring three runs in the ninth inning Roman Kuntz’s 26th home run of the season, but the late-game rally came up short and the Eagles fell 22-20 in an epic offensive juggernaut of a contest to the UT Martin Skyhawks Sunday.

Kuntz is now tied for 2nd in single season home runs in OVC history, and is one shy of both the Morehead State and OVC record.

Junior Will Grimmett (2-2) came out of the bullpen for Morehead State (28-20, 12-9 OVC) and took the loss. Joe Rotkis was a bright spot for the Eagles, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing four innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on four hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Eagles were led by Kuntz, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two home runs, three walks and five RBI. Freshman Hayden Robbins furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI. Nick Gooden also chipped in for Morehead State, putting together four hits in six trips to the plate while adding three doubles and three RBI.

The Eagles lost despite scoring in six different innings in the ballgame, last holding the lead in the fifth inning at 8-7. Morehead State’s biggest output came in its seven-run fifth inning. The big hit for the Eagles in the inning was a three-run home run off the bat of senior Ryley Preece.

The Eagles tied the game 19-19 in the bottom of the ninth frame on Kuntz’s long ball, but UT Martin ended with three runs, including two more homers, in their 11th inning turn at bat to take a 22-19 lead. MSU scored once more in the bottom of the frame and had two runners on, but a double play ended the game short of an MSU series sweep.
