Rhody shows strong performance during Eastern Sprints

KINGSTON, R.I. – All five boats representing the Rhode Island women’s rowing team advanced to the Petite Finals on Sunday at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The Rams competed in a field of 16 teams at Lake Quinsigamond, including 10 Atlantic foes George Washington and Massachusetts.

Rhody’s Second Varsity 4+ highlighted the action by winning the final. The helmsman’s crew Evelyn Tabor, Irma Accius, Anna Kann, Jasmine Hayes And Brigid McShea (8:27.9) beat the second-place Revolutionaries by nearly five full seconds.

All three of Rhode Island’s NCAA boats finished second in their respective finals, while the Third Varsity 8+ placed sixth.

Mate Lily Stasaitis, Catie Castle, Bethany Nordstrom, Nicole Jones, Samantha Gumprecht, Cait Reardon, Emma Barnhart, Sarah Pecoraro And Bella Bruno had started the day by recording the fifth fastest heat time. The Rams’ final time of 7:05.1 was half a second behind first-place GW and ahead of Dartmouth, who finished last in the grand final (7:11.0).

In the Second Varsity 8+, Rhode Island (7:16.4) was just 1.2 seconds away from overtaking Northeastern for a first-place finish. Mate Ellie McGee, Jessica Tosi, Olivia Kowalski, Hailey Pardi, Sammie Gorecki, Eryn Wales, Amanda Cubit, Maia Hembruff And Emma Larsh also recorded a faster time than the last-place boat in the grand final (Boston University, 7:19.8).

URI’s Varsity 4+ held off Michigan State by a third of a second in the Petite Final for another close finish. Mate Sawyer McNish, Emily Olin, Emma Brookins, Abby Galayda And Alexis Moore came in second, behind first-place UMass (8:10.8). Both the Rams and Minutemen posted a better time than the sixth-place team in the grand final (Dartmouth, 8:25.4).
