Gaoth Dobhair heading to the Comórtas decider after victory over Gleann tSúilí

Gaoth Dobhair 1-14
Gleann tSúilí 0-12

Gaoth Dobhair will take on Cill Chartha in the senior final of Comórtas Peil na Gaeltachta on Monday, following their four-point semi-final victory over Gleann tSúilí in Falcarragh.

Ten minutes from time a goal from Niall Friel finally settled a closely contested and sometimes spirited encounter that had the large crowd at St Finian’s Park on edge from the first whistle.

Gaoth Dobhair led by three points at half-time, 0-8 to 0-5, with Michéal Roarty, Ethan Harkin and Adam Mac Iomair kicking the points.

Jack Gallagher, Michael Murphy, Christopher McMonagle, Kealan Dunleavy and Jack Gallagher kicked the Gleann tSúili points.

The teams were level three times in the first half after Cathal Gillespie, Gallagher and Murphy, as well as Ethan Harkin and Adam Mac Iomhair, traded points.

Halfway through the first period, Gaoth Dobhair was tied at 0-5, but finished the half strongly with points from Mac Iomhair (2) and Harkin to take a three-point lead halfway through the locker room.

Glean tSúilí came in all excited about the restart and points from Murphy, Eoghan Scott and Gallagher saw them level at 0-9 each after 40 minutes.

Gaoth Dobhair then flexed his muscles and scored four unanswered points in the space of five minutes to move into a 0-13 to 0-9 lead in the 50th minute.

But there was still life in Gleann tSúilí until Friel, as he had done on a number of occasions, came to the end of a sweeping move to drill to the back of the Glean tSúilí net.

Gaoth Dobhair now led 1-13 to 0-9 and time was running out, but Glean tSúilí fought on. And driven by Donal and Jack Gallagher, Dunleavy, Scott and Murphy they finished strongly to cut Gaoth Dobhair’s lead to four.

It was just a case of Friel’s three-pointer giving them too big a mountain to climb.
