An Israeli attack kills four civilians in southern Lebanon, state media say

BEIRUT (AP) — An Israeli airstrike Sunday in the southern Lebanon city of Mays al Jabal killed four civilians and wounded several others, Lebanese state media and the city’s municipality said.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that the strike took place “while some of the city’s residents were inspecting their homes and shops and the damage they suffered” in previous strikes. These attacks came during seven months of almost daily clashes between the Hezbollah militant group and Israeli forces against the backdrop of Israel’s war against Hezbollah ally Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army said its jets targeted military infrastructure in Hezbollah’s southern Lebanese city, which has clashed with Israeli forces since October 8.

Hezbollah said on Sunday it had carried out at least 10 attacks on Israeli military positions and surveillance equipment near the tense Lebanon-Israel border, while the Israeli military said it had identified some 40 rockets that entered Israeli territory but caused no casualties.

Hezbollah and Israel fought a month-long war in 2006 that ended in a tense standoff. Israel considers the Iran-backed Shiite militant group the most serious immediate threat, and estimates that Hezbollah has about 150,000 missiles and rockets aimed at Israel.

Western diplomats have made a statement series of failed attempts to achieve de-escalation so far in the border region. Hezbollah has insisted it would stop launching rockets into northern Israel if there is a ceasefire to end the months-long war in Gaza. Israel has warned that this is possible launch a war against Hezbollah across the northern border as fighting continues.

The Israeli military also reported targeting Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in other parts of southern Lebanon.

Israeli attacks have killed more than 350 people in Lebanon, most of whom were fighters from Hezbollah and allied groups, but also more than 50 civilians. In Israel, attacks from Lebanon have killed at least 10 civilians and 12 soldiers.
