Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham: Premier League – live reaction | Premier League

Key events

90+7 mins Vicario makes a flying save from Nunez, right on the edge of the Liverpool area. And that’s it.

Part

90+4 min: goal disallowed Salah scores emphatically from a low cross from Nunez, but against Nunez the flag goes up. On the replay it looked tight, although play resumed very quickly. After the fiasco in the second leg, I imagine the VAR team were a billion percent sure before telling Paul Tierney to restart the game.

Part

90+3 mins “Look,” says Angus Chisholm, “I’m an Arsenal fan, so Spurs’ travails are extremely funny to me. But I’m also Australian, so I feel compelled to stand up a little for Ange, and the fact that his comments have been somewhat misinterpreted and subsequently blown out of proportion.

‘He hasn’t said that set pieces are unimportant, or that he doesn’t care about them, or anything like that. His point is that they are not his priority at this point in his ‘project’, and he has more pressing fundamental issues to work on with his team. That seemed pretty clear. It took Arteta years to transform Arsenal into the well-drilled regular team they are today, and they clearly had more pressing technical, tactical and personnel issues to deal with in the intervening seasons.

“There is of course no guarantee that Ange will have the same success. But if Tottenham are willing to jettison him, with possible vacancies elsewhere, he may finally get the chance to manage a great English club that he so clearly deserves.”

There is no chance he will leave Spurs unless a bigger club chooses him.

Part

90+2 mins Alexander-Arnold gets a yellow card for taking his time on a throw-in.

Part

90+1 min Richarlison gets behind the defense again and is about to shoot from 10 meters when Alexander-Arnold takes the ball off his toe. Richarlison’s movement has been brilliant since he came on.

90 minutes Alexander-Arnold’s outswinging corner is headed wide by Van Dijk, the 33rd goal attempt in this match. Moments later, Maddison’s dangerous low cross is cleared by Gomez in the six-yard box.

Seven extra minutes. So, make it 20, this is a lot of fun.

88 min: No penalty I think that’s fair enough, although a free kick would have been given if it had been outside the area. Different rules apply, I guess, and for most observers it was a brilliant piece of acrobatic defending against Gomez.

Part

87 min: So close! Richarlison races into the area to the left of center and fires a shot over goal with his left. Alisson makes a brilliant save, but the ball still ends up in front of an open goal. Gomez clears the ball with a spectacular flying kick and then strikes Johnson’s head in his follow-up action.

There is a VAR control for a fine.

Part

87 mins Salah plays a nice angled pass into the area for the onrushing Szoboszlai, who shoots wide of the near post on the run. Couldn’t wrap his foot all the way around the ball, etc.

Part

86 mins “I obviously love Robertson and he is an important player for Scotland,” said Simon McMahon. “I also have fond memories of his one season at Tannadice, but they are somewhat tarnished by his last game in a United shirt. The one and only time my team was actually featured on the MBM (if you don’t count the hundreds of times I emailed during other games of course). I mean, St. Johnstone. BLOODY ST. JOHNSTON.”

Part

85 minutes Richarlison has been full of beans since his arrival. After another good run from him, Son Lo sets up Celso for a tame shot that is easily saved by Alisson.

Part

84 min: Liverpool substitution Dominic Szoboszlai replaces the excellent Harvey Elliott.

Part

83 min: What an effort! Alexander-Arnold intercepts a pass on the halfway line, sees Vicario off his line and immediately takes a spectacular shot towards goal. Vicario storms back in desperation and is greatly relieved to see him fly a few feet over the bar.

82 mins Salah goes down in the area after a challenge from Skipp and is about to appeal for a penalty when the flag goes up for offside.

On the replay the offside situation looked tight, but play was resumed fairly quickly. No idea if it was a violation.

Part

80 minutes Salah misses a sitter from six yards. It was a strange incident: Elliott’s deep cross was hit back across the goal by Gakpo. Van de Ven emphatically left the ball behind, even though Salah was behind him on the six-yard line, but that surprised Salah so much that he could only dangle a leg in the fresh air.

As Gary Neville says, Van de Ven can only have assumed that Vicario was behind him.

Part

80 minutes Almost another one for Spurs! Son beats Alexander-Arnold on the left side of the area but slips as he tries to get past Quansah. If he had passed him, he could have made a clear shot.

Part

Liverpool went out at 4-0 and Spurs took advantage. Skipp found Richarlison in far too much space, back to goal ten yards out. He didn’t have enough time to turn around, so he laid it back to Son, who fired a disguised shot past Alisson.

A VAR check for offside follows, but the goal stands. Son is the first visiting player to score in four consecutive Premier League games at Anfield.

GOAL! Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham (Son 77)

75 min: Spurs substitution Giovani Lo Celso on, a sad Pape Sarr away.

GOAL! Liverpool 4-1 Tottenham (Richarlison 73)

Another clean slate bites the dust. Johnson breaks away on the right and slides an early cross to Richarlison, all alone in the middle. He guides a first finish over Alisson from about eight meters. He took that well.

72 mins Elliott tries to repeat his goal – the position is almost identical – but curls straight at Vicario.

He’s such an impressive player.

Part

71 minutes Son’s cut to the byline takes Quanash away and moves into dangerous territory. However, Richarlison is hot on his heels and Gomez has time to unfold a beach chair before cleaning up.

Part

71 minutes Since the 4-0 win at Villa Park in March, Spurs’ results away from home have not been particularly good: 0-3, 1-1, 0-4, 0-2, 0-4*.

Part

69 mins “Delighted to see Liverpool paying a fitting tribute to Klopp’s extraordinary tenure after the last few dismal games,” said Colum Fordham. “Really impressed with Robertson, who scores goals and makes wonderful crosses. One of Liverpool’s most important players.”

I’m sure Simon McMahon will agree: he’s peaking at just the right time.

Part

67 mins Alisson makes a trademark one-on-one save from Son, even though everyone knew Richarlison was offside in the build-up. Alexander-Arnold didn’t bother running back with Son, it was that obvious.

Part

66 mins Maddison cleverly turns Bajcetic on the edge of the area, but then shoots over with his left foot. Still, it looks bright.

Part

66 mins “Good form at the right time,” says Matt Dony, cheerfully high-fiving strangers on the street. “Glad they didn’t leave it comically late or something….”

Part

65 min: Double substitution for Liverpool Joe Gomez and Stefan Bajcetic – back after missing almost the entire season due to injury – come on for Andy Robertson and Wataru Endo.

Part

63 minutes Maddison is immediately fouled on the edge of the D. He hits the free kick against the wall, and twenty seconds later Bissouma gets a yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Part

61 min: Triple substitution for Spurs James Maddison, Richarlison and Oliver Skipp replace Bentancur, Kulusevski and poor Emerson Royal.

Part

Jurgen Klopp beams with fatherly pride. Emerson Royal’s defensive header went only to Salah, who tapped the ball back to Elliott. He skipped gracefully past Bentancur, on the edge of the D, before firing a left-footed drive into the top corner. That’s a great goal.

57 minutes Emerson Royal fouls Salah and gets a yellow card. He has what is known in some cultures as a torrid.
