Jak Jones vs Kyren Wilson LIVE: World Snooker Championship score and updates from the unlikely Crucible final

Man bites young boy’s ear, broadcast live during the World Snooker Championship

Qualifier Jak Jones will have to fight back from 7-1 down as Kyren Wilson made a dominant start in a surprise World Snooker Championship final.

The two-day opening session of the best-of-35 Crucible Theater showpiece was controlled from start to finish by Wilson, opening with an excellent 129 and scoring freely throughout with a nervous Jones unable to find his flow. With some uncharacteristically loose safety play from the Welshman, allowing him frequent opportunities to build breaks, Wilson showed his clean cue to take the first seven frames of the match before Jones finally got on the board in the final frame of the afternoon session.

Unheralded Jones, who defeated former world champion Stuart Bingham 17-12 in last night’s semi-final, entered as the underdog but has shown his talents by also beating Judd Trump in this tournament. The 30-year-old only made his Crucible debut last year and has shaken off doubts about his first during his meteoric run to the final, where he will look to join the illustrious board of former champions.

Wilson, meanwhile, has been to the final of the World Snooker Championship before, but this will be a different experience to his heavy final defeat in 2020 against Ronnie O’Sullivan, which was played in front of a third full arena due to Covid restrictions. Wilson defeated David Gilbert in the other semi-final and the 32-year-old Englishman is moving closer to ending his major title drought after showing plenty of potential earlier in his career.

Kyren Wilson 7-1 Jak Jones

Sheer dominance from Kyren Wilson so far, leaving Jak Jones to pay for his mistakes, with the Welshman seemingly a little underwhelmed by the occasion. From an opening 129 that showcased his shot-making prowess, Wilson was in complete control.

How does Jak Jones use the time between sessions? He opted not to make a trip to the training ground midway through the session, which infuriated Steve Davis in the BBC studio. Take a nap and then sit at the table? He’ll need at least five frames tonight, you’d say, to keep in touch.

Kyren Wilson 7-1 Jak Jones

A moment of fun at the end of the frame, as Kyren Wilson snookers himself onto the black he needs to keep his chances alive, asks Wilson to clear the blocking red and then pretends to play the trick .

But Jak Jones is on the board! Finally a frame falls his waythe two players share a friendly handshake as they leave.

Interesting: it takes three snookers, but Kyren Wilson still comes to the table. Of course not…
