Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Aston Villa (May 5, 2024) Game analysis

Brighton snapped a six-match winless run in the Premier League as they beat Aston Villa 1-0 at home on Sunday after Joao Pedro scored an 87th-minute winner in a scrappy affair.

Simon Adingra had been Brighton’s busiest player all game and it was his foray into the penalty area late in the second half that led to a foul from Villa defender Ezri Konsa, forcing the referee to point to the spot.

Villa’s stand-in goalkeeper Robin Olsen had made several saves to keep his side in the match and even denied Joao Pedro from the spot, but he could do nothing as the Brazilian headed in the rebound for his twentieth goal of the season in all competitions.

The result moved Brighton into 11th place on 47 points, while Villa are fourth on 67 points as they continue to wait for a place in next season’s Champions League, while Tottenham are still in the hunt in fifth place.
