Chelsea 5-0 West Ham United: Nicolas Jackson seals double comfortable victory

Cole Palmer scores against West Ham
Cole Palmer has scored ten goals in his last five appearances at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea strengthened their chances of securing European football next season as they cruised to victory against West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

It took just 15 minutes for Chelsea to take the lead, with Cole Palmer reacting quickest when he encountered a loose ball in the West Ham box.

West Ham hit back almost immediately when Jarrod Bowen’s header hit the crossbar, but from then on it was one-way traffic.

Chelsea doubled their lead after half an hour through Conor Gallagher before Noni Madueke headed in the third six minutes later.

Nicolas Jackson struck twice in the second half to round off a thoroughly positive afternoon for the Blues.

With only three games left to play, Chelsea’s season appears to be heading for a strong finish. They have climbed to seventh place and are just two points behind sixth-placed Newcastle, while West Ham, who have two games in hand, remain in ninth place.

Chelsea exudes confidence

After a difficult first season under Mauricio Pochettino, things are starting to click at Chelsea and European football could still be on the agenda for next season if they maintain this momentum.

The Blues have won nine of their past 11 Premier League home games and are now on a four-match winning streak at Stamford Bridge, having beaten Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham and now West Ham.

They seem to be playing with more confidence and that bodes well for next season.

A confident finish into the bottom right corner from Palmer set Chelsea on their way and took his league tally to 21.

Captain Gallagher’s strike was equally impressive as he hammered home with emphasis to leave Alphonse Areola floored.

The match was all but over in the 36th minute as Madueke found space in the six-yard box to turn in Thiago Silva’s knockdown.

Jackson further tightened Chelsea’s grip on all three points shortly after half-time and showed great composure as he rolled into the fifth after beating the offside trap late in the game.

Chelsea didn’t face too many questions defensively, but Pochettino will also be happy to see his side back-to-back clean sheets in the league for the first time since February 2023.

More to follow.
