PSV secures historic 25th Dutch Eredivisie crown with 4-2 win over Sparta Rotterdam

PSV Eindhoven sealed its first national title in six years and the 25th in history on Sunday by beating Sparta Rotterdam 4-2.

Peter Bosz’s team, consisting of American players Sergiño Dest, Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi, dominated the Eredivisie season, losing only one match, scoring 107 goals and conceding 19, with two games to play.

PSV started the season with a record run of 17 wins, before drawing 1-1 against Utrecht. The only other team to reach the seventeen-win mark was PSV in 1988.

“We have a great team and have played a great season,” midfielder Joey Veerman told ESPN after the match.

It is the first Major League title for Bosz as a coach. He previously led Ajax to the Europa League final in 2017, where they lost to Manchester United.

PSV only needed a point against Sparta. It took all three of them.

Rotterdam midfielder Metinho threatened to spoil the party atmosphere in Eindhoven when he scored in the 8th minute, but an own goal from Said Bakari leveled the score and Johan Bakayoko put PSV ahead in the 26th minute. Another own goal, this time by PSV defender Olivier Boscagli, brought Sparta back to the level before half-time.

Boscagli made up for it by firing in a subtly chipped free kick from Veerman, giving PSV a 3-2 lead. This led to championship chants in the stadium and beer drinks on a packed market square in the center of Eindhoven, where fans could watch the match on screens.

Defender Jordan Teze put the result and PSV’s championship beyond doubt when he made it 4-2 in the 78th minute.

In the previous three Eredivisie matches, as they closed in on the title, PSV scored a total of 19 goals and only conceded one. The team also won the season-opening Johan Cruyff Plate by beating last year’s Eredivisie champions Feyenoord 1–0 in Rotterdam.

PSV striker and captain Luuk de Jong, joint top scorer in the competition with AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis in the match, was substituted in the 77th minute with what appeared to be a minor knee injury. He was replaced by Pepi.

Dest, on loan from Barcelona to PSV, is recovering from a serious knee injury and is not expected to play again this year.
