IPL 2024: Rahul Chahar, Harshal Patel shine with three fers as PBKS restrict CSK to 167/9

Dharamsala, May 5 Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and pacer Harshal Patel starred with three fers as Punjab Kings restricted Chennai Super Kings to 167/9 in their 20 overs at the HPCA Stadium here on Sunday. At one point, CSK were riding at 69/1 in seven overs and looked on course for a score of over 200. But Chahar’s 3-23, including taking two wickets in the eighth over, and Harshal’s 3-24 ensured that CSK fell far short of an imposing total despite Ravindra Jadeja’s 43.

CSK were pushed into bat first by PBKS and suffered an early blow when Ajinkya Rahane looked to take out Arshdeep Singh but hit straight at the fielder at mid-wicket. Daryl Mitchell started pulling and lifting with panache to collect four and six respectively from Arshdeep.

Ruturaj Gaikwad went wild in the last over of Power-play by hitting three fours and taking 19 runs off Harpreet Brar as CSK closed Power-play at 60/1. But Chahar curbed CSK’s run-scoring run by removing Gaikwad and Shivam Dube in successive deliveries – both trailing the keeper.

Harshal dealt CSK another huge blow by trapping Mitchell lbw with a nip backer that stayed low. Mitchell immediately went for the review but replays showed the ball clipped the leg stump.

Jadeja and Moeen Ali hit two fours each before the latter scored a pull-to-short fine-leg after a slower delivery from Sam Curran.

Chahar took his third wicket when Mitchell Santner over-firing. Shardul Thakur hit two fours and a six off Curran and Chahar, while Jadeja followed that up by giving the latter six runs to score quick runs for CSK at the end.

But Harshal had other plans, casting Thakur and MS Dhoni for successive deliveries with slower cut-offs. Jadeja hit Arshdeep for four and six on the first three balls of the final over, before the fast bowler took the batsman out with a slower knuckle ball outside off-stump and made him miscue to long-on, as CSK finished three runs less than 170.

Short scores:

Chennai Super Kings 167/9 in 20 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 43, Ruturaj Gaikwad 32; Rahul Chahar 3-23, Harshal Patel 3-24) vs Punjab Kings
