Red Cross issues call for blood donors in Richland, Knox and Crawford counties

As World Blood Donor Day approaches on June 14, the American Red Cross reports
blood and platelet donors are currently crucial to combat the drastic shortage of donations in recent weeks.

According to the American Red Cross, Central and Southern Ohio, donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with blood type O and platelet donors.

Summer travel and harsh weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the season, which may prevent donors from donating. If fewer people donate, there will be less blood available for hospital patients, according to the Red Cross.

“Make blood or platelet donation a priority this summer. Reserve a time to donate now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App,” the Red Cross said in an emailed news release.

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day, a day designed to raise awareness of the need for a safe, diverse and stable blood supply, and to recognize volunteer blood donors.

“Now is the perfect time to give, especially for those who haven’t given in a while, or who have never given before. Those who come to give between June 10 and June 30 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice,” the Red Cross said.

See RedCrossBlood.org/DoGood for details.
