‘Thais’ at Utah Opera

Bigger opera doesn’t get bigger than ‘Thaïs’, Jules Massenet’s epic story about ancient Egypt, about a monk who meets a beautiful courtesan and tries to save her soul from her hedonistic life. Utah Opera performs “Thaïs” for the first time, with soprano Nicole Heaston in the title role, the Utah Symphony playing and a 40-person choir performing the score – with concertmaster Madeline Adkins performing the violin solo “Méditation” – and dancers from Repertory dance theater also takes the stage. Ant music returns

English New Wave singer Adam Ant turns 70 in November, but age won’t keep him off stage. ‘The Great Comet’ arrives

Pioneer Theater Company closes the season with a big musical with a long title: “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.” Composer/lyricist/playwright Dave Malloy used a 70-page excerpt from Leo Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’ to tell the story of depressed Pierre, whose boyfriend Andrey is engaged to Natasha – who is instead attracted to Pierre’s Anatole brother in law. law.
