Lionel Messi has scored ten league goals this season.

Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick for Inter Miami on Saturday, but it is not the impressive performance that is the focus of attention. Instead, it is once again Lionel Messi who dominates the headlines thanks to a performance that almost exceeded all expectations.

In a 6-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls, Messi broke two MLS records. “I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like this again,” Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said, according to MLS.

The World Cup-winning Argentine became the first player in the competition to provide five assists in a single match, while his goal and assists contribution of six goals at Chase Stadium was the largest contribution in a single match in the competition’s history.

Last week, during Miami’s victory over the New England Revolution, Messi had set two more MLS records.

He has now scored and assisted in six consecutive league matches, taking his goal tally for the season to ten in eight games – equal to Suárez. No other player in MLS has provided more assists than Messi’s 12 this season.

Messi and Suárez formed a formidable partnership at Barcelona and the pair seamlessly transferred that understanding onto the pitch while playing for Miami.

Miami went into halftime down 1-0, with Dante Vanzeir putting New York ahead in the 30th minute. But after the break, substitute Matías Rojas leveled in the 48th minute, after a breakthrough by Messi.

Messi then put his team 2-1 ahead before supplying three goals for Suárez and again for new signing Rojas, who finished the match with two goals. Emil Forsberg scored for a consolation goal in the 97th minute.

Miami remains the leader in the Eastern Conference and will play CF Montreal on May 11.
